  • Cloud-Native Transformation and Platform Engineering in FinTech: Tackling Legacy Infrastructure

As the FinTech sector continues to evolve, cloud-native transformation has become essential for achieving agility, scalability, and compliance. Yet, this shift is not without its challenges. FinTech companies face high processing demands, slow deployment cycles, cost management complexities, the need for bare-metal reduction, and the push towards distributed infrastructures. Addressing these issues requires strategic planning, specialized expertise, and a structured approach to modernization. In this article, we explore how FinTech firms can overcome these hurdles, including skill gaps and business case considerations, to effectively harness cloud-native technologies. Key findings by CNCF, 2024: Companies are in need for multi-cloud strategies, yet skill-gaps and security challenges are major concerns Escaping the End-of-Life Trap FinTech organizations often depend on legacy infrastructure, which, while reliable, restricts their capacity for innovation and hinders responsiveness to market demands. These aging systems often lack compatibility with cloud-native platforms, affecting scalability and agility. Beyond these technical limitations, there are compelling business cases for modernization. With strategic platform engineering, transitioning to cloud-native platforms can streamline processes, reduce operational costs, and elevate service quality. However, skill gaps pose a significant challenge. As cloud-native technologies become more sophisticated, firms may struggle to find the expertise needed to manage these new environments. A phased migration strategy helps address this by focusing on critical services initially, thereby minimizing operational risks while incrementally building in-house capabilities. By investing in modern platforms like Kubernetes, FinTech companies can achieve faster deployments, enhanced reliability, and a more seamless developer experience. Hybrid Infrastructure: The Cloud Experience On-Premise While some FinTech firms are ready to fully embrace the public cloud, others hesitate due to regulatory or data sovereignty concerns. Many are opting for a hybrid approach, which combines the flexibility and scalability of cloud computing within their own data centers. This model benefits greatly from platform engineering, as it introduces tools and practices that support cost management, avoid vendor lock-in, and provide a consistent user experience across both on-premise and cloud environments. A cloud-agnostic orchestration layer can provide the necessary flexibility to integrate across different environments without tying firms to a single provider. Additionally, application management abstraction streamlines operations, enabling developers and operations teams to enjoy a consistent experience, regardless of the underlying infrastructure. Aligning data residency strategies with regulatory requirements ensures that sensitive financial data is safeguarded while firms capitalize on cloud capabilities. Navigating the Risks: Security, Compliance, and Operational Disruptions While cloud-native transformation brings many benefits, it also entails risks. Security is a primary concern, especially when managing sensitive financial data during migration. Compliance with regulations such as GDPR and PCI-DSS is essential, as non-compliance can lead to severe financial and reputational impacts. Moreover, migrating from legacy to cloud-native environments can lead to operational disruptions, which can affect customer trust and financial performance. A journey with risks: Every transformation process poses threats for operations and budget Mitigating these risks requires a robust multi-cloud governance, security, and compliance strategy. Embedding these elements throughout the transformation process helps minimize vulnerabilities and control costs. Similar Challenges Across Sectors: Healthcare, Insurance, and Media The hurdles FinTech companies face in cloud-native transformation are not unique. Other industries such as healthcare, insurance, and media share similar concerns, particularly around data security, regulatory compliance, and scalability. Healthcare providers, for instance, must protect patient data while adopting cloud technologies to improve service delivery. Insurance companies also manage vast amounts of personal data and face strict regulatory requirements, much like FinTech firms. The media industry, meanwhile, relies on high scalability and low latency to deliver seamless content experiences to users, which is comparable to the needs of financial service providers. Conclusion: Advancing with siticom's Cloud-Native Services Siticom provides tailored support for FinTech and other industries facing cloud-native transformation challenges. • Future-oriented network design: siticom and Currenta - a success story in the campus environment

Our network design for Currenta is an example of successful planning and orchestration in a complex campus environment. The focus is on the Currenta backbone project, in which an IP data network was implemented for the CHEMPARK operator across three locations. siticom acts as a system integrator and delivers a turnkey solution that provides Currenta with a high-performance ICT infrastructure for production facilities, logistics processes and offices. Since commissioning in October 2018, siticom has continuously optimized operations, expanded transmission capacity and successfully connected around 560 customer services. Operational challenges have also been overcome and the network is running smoothly with a high level of customer satisfaction. Further details on the Currenta backbone project can be found in our blog entry Campus network from A-Z at Currenta . As a long-standing partner, siticom will continue to support the operation and further development of the project in the future. In the following interview with two colleagues from our project team, Christoph Falkenstern and Robert Wehrheim, we find out more about the progress made in recent years and the latest developments that have driven the Currenta Backbone project forward. Hello Christoph, hello Robert could you briefly explain what role siticom has played in the last 6 years of partnership and what has changed since then? R. Wehrheim : For six years, siticom has played a decisive role in the operation and development of Currenta's IT network. We ensure smooth 24/7 operation and fulfill agreed service level agreements (SLAs). With our own service hotline, we offer quick solutions to problems. Since the beginning of our collaboration, Currenta has made significant progress in the area of IT network operations. Together we have developed further and established successful processes. We support the development of services and the design of new services, which has enabled the network to continue to evolve. C. Falkenstern : In addition to supplying hardware, we manage the movement of goods efficiently and offer warehousing outside the Chemparks for greater flexibility. We are also responsible for supplier handling for network infrastructure providers, software updates and quality management. Over the course of the partnership, we have developed into a competent partner for services and consulting. Today, we are a trusted advisor for Currenta and provide support not only in day-to-day operations, but also in strategic network planning and expansion. Our cooperation is based on trust, expertise and mutual success. What challenges did we overcome in the course of the project and how did we help to ensure that the network runs smoothly? C. Falkenstern : Over the course of the project, we overcame numerous challenges to ensure the smooth operation of the network. The Currenta network is monitored around the clock by siticom. In order to be able to react quickly in the event of a fault, we operate an on-call service staffed by technical specialists. This ensures that in the event of a fault, the network has been and can continue to be fault cleared immediately. In this way and through other accompanying measures, it was possible to correct problems with a specific router type without affecting Currenta services. The design of the Currenta network, which relies on redundancy wherever possible and sensible, is of course also a major advantage. R. Wehrheim : Regular software updates and monthly reports contribute to security and transparency. When expanding the network and introducing new services, the continuous availability of the network services is taken into account, just as security concerns are the focus of every measure. We react quickly and prudently to hardware problems from hardware manufacturers and are able to significantly expand network capacity and the number of usable customer ports. Overall, we have successfully doubled the available network capacity and increased the number of customer ports by a factor of around ten. The number of customer services was increased from around 50 in 2018 to currently around 1,250. C. Falkenstern : All of the measures listed make a significant contribution to ensuring that the network runs smoothly and meets customer needs. siticom acts as a competent contact for Currenta and customer requests are implemented effectively and quickly. Where appropriate and necessary, we supplement Currenta's service portfolio, for example by taking over a 24/7 fault hotline for Currenta's customer service. What new services or extensions have been added since the network went live and how does siticom plan to develop its ICT service portfolio in the future? C. Falkenstern / R. Wehrheim : Since our network went live, we have continuously expanded and improved our range of services: Together, we have greatly expanded the network, with a doubling of routers and an increased number of nodes. At the same time, we have significantly increased the transmission capacity by switching from one 100G and one 10G ring to two 100G rings. The available transport network capacity was also expanded. In addition, we are planning to upgrade DWDM routes to 400G capacity in the future. Due to our support, Currenta is now also active as an Internet service provider, which will enable us to configure Internet connections automatically in future, similar to other well-known network operators. In order to increase network stability, we are in the process of overcoming Currenta's dependence on a single network provider and will in future procure services from several providers. In addition, Currenta will in future offer leased lines or even capacity as a carrier to other service providers. We currently support around 1,250 customer services and are in the process of expanding the number of locations from 3 to 6. In addition to the existing locations in the Chemparks Leverkusen, Dormagen and Krefeld-Uerdingen, Monheim and PoP locations (Point of Presence) in Frankfurt and Düsseldorf have been added. Further PoP locations are planned for the future. The opening of PoP locations in Frankfurt and Düsseldorf marks an important step, as these are locations outside the Chemparks and thus strengthen our presence in important economic centers. With our support, Currenta has also expanded its performance and service portfolio in order to reduce future acquisitions. A new generation of service routers was introduced to further increase the scope of services in the network. This enables Currenta's customers to be offered a comprehensive range of services, including support in the planning, implementation and improvement of workflows and all kinds of processes. siticom thus plays a crucial role for our customer Currenta, as we provide them with important support that is essential for its appearance and future growth. • 5G Mobile Connectivity in Europe's Tunneling Projects

A Challenge for Communication Technology IIn Europe, we're witnessing a steady increase in tunnel construction projects. These complex underground projects pose special challenges to communication and safety, especially for emergency services, for whom reliable Mission Critical Communication (MCC) is essential. Flexibility to adapt to changing conditions and independence from public communication infrastructure are crucial for this purpose. 5G connectivity enables local services such as communication without an internet connection and also offers benefits such as lower susceptibility to errors and cost efficiency. Use cases range from IoT device tracking to locate personnel in real-time, to image recognition services, and the use of drones for analysis and exploration. siticom tests in the Stuttgart 21 tunnels: Insights into practice To demonstrate the effectiveness of this technology, we visited one of the largest tunnel construction projects in Europe: S21. The challenge is to enable seamless communication in an environment where conventional methods can hardly meet the specific requirements. On-site, we set up our mobile 5G system, which is characterized by its fast and flexible setup.     Our initial tests included voice communication and data transmission, which worked excellently despite the challenging environment. A highlight was a live demonstration in which we made VoIP calls and transmitted live videos from various tunnel sections. The feedback from engineers and emergency responders was overwhelmingly positive. They highlighted the improved communication quality and reliability, which are crucial for the safety and efficiency of such large projects. Special challenge underground Conventional tunnel radio systems are set up using so-called Leaky Feeders, which act as antennas, depending on the frequency range used. In the frequency range of 3.7 to 3.8 GHz (N78 Band), which is used in Germany for private 5G networks, directional antennas as an alternative, offering significant advantages in terms of installation and maintenance effort, especially during the construction phase. Unlike open areas, radio wave propagation in tunnels is heavily determined by Non Line of Sight (NLOS) conditions with a high proportion of reflections and multipath propagation. In addition to the frequency range and the characteristics of the chosen transmitter and receiver antennas, the topology of the route, the geometry of the tunnel cross-section, and even the surface condition of the tunnel walls also influence the range of the signal. This makes a theoretical estimation of the expected signal quality at various positions within the tunnel extremely difficult, and therefore real measurements are essential. The diagram shows the calculated values for the Reference Signal Received Power (RSRP) based on a simple fading model and the post-processed measurements depending on the distance from the transmitting antenna. Conclusion: A promising path into the future The combination of field tests and customer feedback confirms that our 5G technology can revolutionize communication and monitoring in tunnel construction projects. The technology not only offers improved safety and efficiency but also opens up new possibilities in the construction industry and beyond. siticom is committed to advancing these innovations to meet the specific requirements of these challenging projects. Our expertise in Private 5G complements our long-standing experience in infrastructure projects, offering a holistic approach from the Smart Infrastructure Use-Case through construction planning to the operation of carrier-grade enterprise networks . • Network Source Of Truth (NSOT): A Foundation For Network Automation

Network downtime costs money. Making manual configurations and failovers is risky, potentially causing even more downtime. On the other hand, the required changes to implement network automation can be a huge effort. Network Source of Truth (NSoT) systems centralize network-related data, simplifying the management of configurations, IP addresses, and devices, and ensuring data consistency and efficiency across the organization. They are a building block, but not a panacea. The Importance of Organization Effective architecture is critical. Translating business requirements into technical requirements is the starting point. An NSoT is only as valuable as the accuracy of its entries. Even in advanced IT departments, maintaining accurate data can be challenging. Data sanitization is essential; though time-consuming, it accelerates automation processes in the end. Data sanitization involves cleaning and organizing data to ensure it is accurate, consistent, and free of errors. This includes prechecks, postchecks, test automation , pipeline validation, and change management. Tools like Container Lab and digital twins are gaining importance in network automation. Additionally, Network as a Service (NaaS) enhances scalability and flexibility by supporting various network functions like VPNs, SDN, and NFV , allowing businesses to respond swiftly to changing demands. "For Whom It May Concern" Network automation is beneficial when standards are in place, especially for data center operators, ISPs, and large enterprises. For example, a company managing dozens of warehouses and sites with SAP cloud systems could benefit significantly. Automating network configurations and management can lead to reduced errors, improved efficiency, and lower operational costs. Start with small use cases and pilot projects to gradually scale up. Continuous improvement and adaptation are crucial to keep up with evolving network demands and technologies. Ideas Where to Start Kick off your network automation journey with tasks that offer quick wins and clear value. Begin with Configuration Differentials—automate the process of identifying and correcting deviations in your network configurations, focusing on critical parameters like NTP and Syslog. This establishes a strong foundation for consistency and security. Change, observation, and testing are essential throughout this iterative process. Incorporate prechecks, postchecks, test automation, and pipeline validation at every stage to ensure changes are effective and reliable. Once you've established configuration automation, move on to Automated Backups and Restores to secure reliable recovery processes, and IP Address Management (IPAM) to minimize manual errors in IP assignments. Finally, explore Network Device Provisioning to streamline the setup of new devices, ensuring they are correctly configured from the outset. This phased approach, combined with continuous testing and validation, builds a robust automation strategy that enhances control, efficiency, and reliability across your network operations. Tooling Decision and Necessary Skills Choosing the right tools for network automation can be challenging. Here's a closer look at some options: Open-Source Tools: NetBox  and Nautobot : These tools offer comprehensive IP Address Management (IPAM) and Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) features. They have strong community support, which means regular updates and a wealth of shared knowledge. However, they require substantial technical expertise to set up and maintain. For instance, users need to be familiar with Python and Django, as well as containerization technologies like Docker. Nornir : A flexible automation framework ideal for users with Python programming skills. It provides powerful automation capabilities, though it is not a dedicated NSoT solution. Nornir integrates well with other tools and libraries, allowing users to create custom automation workflows that go beyond standard NSoT functionalities. This flexibility makes it suitable for complex and unique network environments. Commercial Solutions: NetMRI (Infoblox) : A robust solution offering extensive functionalities for network automation, compliance, and security. It provides detailed network visibility and automated workflows, which can significantly reduce manual tasks. However, it comes with a higher cost and complexity, which might be excessive for smaller organizations. Device42 : Another feature-rich solution known for its comprehensive IT asset management and network discovery capabilities. It supports complex network environments and integrates with various IT service management (ITSM) tools. Like NetMRI, it is more suited for larger organizations due to its cost and complexity. One Example for Lesser-Known Solutions: Dropbox’s NSoT : This tool provides robust network data management but has a smaller user base and less community support compared to more established solutions. It might be suitable for niche applications or smaller environments where its specific capabilities align well with organizational needs. However, the smaller user base means fewer resources for troubleshooting and community-driven improvements. Selecting the right tool requires careful consideration of the organization's size, existing expertise, and specific needs. Balancing the cost, complexity, and features of each option is crucial for a successful implementation. For instance, smaller organizations might prioritize ease of use and cost-effectiveness, while larger enterprises might focus on scalability and comprehensive feature sets.   Outlook: Long-Term Benefits Network automation offers several long-term benefits depending on use cases and industry, such as: Self-Optimizing Networks (SON):  Using advanced algorithms and machine learning to adjust network settings automatically, improving performance and reducing manual intervention. For example, SON can dynamically adjust bandwidth allocation based on real-time traffic patterns, ensuring optimal performance. Automated Ticketing:  Ticketsystems in combination with monitoring and automation solutions can detect issues, create tickets and trigger scripts to resolve them with minimal or no human interaction. This can significantly reduce response times and free up IT staff for more strategic tasks. Automated Media Switching/Routing: Automation handles media switching and routing more efficiently within a broadcasting company, reducing the risk of human error and ensuring seamless transitions. Audit Trails:  Comprehensive audit trails ensure accountability and traceability in network changes and operations. This is crucial for compliance with industry regulations and internal policies. Improved Resource Allocation: Automated network management optimizes resource use. An e-commerce company used automation to dynamically allocate bandwidth during peak times, improving customer experience without additional costs. This ensures that critical resources are available when needed most, enhancing overall service quality. Enhanced Security:  Automation helps consistently apply security policies across the network. A healthcare provider used automation to enforce strict access controls and continuously monitor for vulnerabilities, significantly reducing the risk of breaches. Automated security measures can quickly respond to threats, reducing the window of vulnerability. In conclusion, while the journey to full network automation is complex and demanding, the benefits it brings in terms of efficiency, reliability, and scalability make it a worthwhile investment for the future. The examples above illustrate how organizations can leverage network automation to achieve substantial improvements in their operations. By carefully selecting the right tools and maintaining accurate data, businesses can streamline their network management processes and stay ahead in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
