  • 5G Mobile Connectivity in Europe's Tunneling Projects

A Challenge for Communication Technology IIn Europe, we're witnessing a steady increase in tunnel construction projects. These complex underground projects pose special challenges to communication and safety, especially for emergency services, for whom reliable Mission Critical Communication (MCC) is essential. Flexibility to adapt to changing conditions and independence from public communication infrastructure are crucial for this purpose. 5G connectivity enables local services such as communication without an internet connection and also offers benefits such as lower susceptibility to errors and cost efficiency. Use cases range from IoT device tracking to locate personnel in real-time, to image recognition services, and the use of drones for analysis and exploration. siticom tests in the Stuttgart 21 tunnels: Insights into practice To demonstrate the effectiveness of this technology, we visited one of the largest tunnel construction projects in Europe: S21. The challenge is to enable seamless communication in an environment where conventional methods can hardly meet the specific requirements. On-site, we set up our mobile 5G system, which is characterized by its fast and flexible setup. Our initial tests included voice communication and data transmission, which worked excellently despite the challenging environment. A highlight was a live demonstration in which we made VoIP calls and transmitted live videos from various tunnel sections. The feedback from engineers and emergency responders was overwhelmingly positive. They highlighted the improved communication quality and reliability, which are crucial for the safety and efficiency of such large projects. Special challenge underground Conventional tunnel radio systems are set up using so-called Leaky Feeders, which act as antennas, depending on the frequency range used. In the frequency range of 3.7 to 3.8 GHz (N78 Band), which is used in Germany for private 5G networks, directional antennas as an alternative, offering significant advantages in terms of installation and maintenance effort, especially during the construction phase. Unlike open areas, radio wave propagation in tunnels is heavily determined by Non Line of Sight (NLOS) conditions with a high proportion of reflections and multipath propagation. In addition to the frequency range and the characteristics of the chosen transmitter and receiver antennas, the topology of the route, the geometry of the tunnel cross-section, and even the surface condition of the tunnel walls also influence the range of the signal. This makes a theoretical estimation of the expected signal quality at various positions within the tunnel extremely difficult, and therefore real measurements are essential. The diagram shows the calculated values for the Reference Signal Received Power (RSRP) based on a simple fading model and the post-processed measurements depending on the distance from the transmitting antenna. Conclusion: A promising path into the future The combination of field tests and customer feedback confirms that our 5G technology can revolutionize communication and monitoring in tunnel construction projects. The technology not only offers improved safety and efficiency but also opens up new possibilities in the construction industry and beyond. siticom is committed to advancing these innovations to meet the specific requirements of these challenging projects. Our expertise in Private 5G complements our long-standing experience in infrastructure projects, offering a holistic approach from the Smart Infrastructure Use-Case through construction planning to the operation of carrier-grade enterprise networks. • Future-oriented network design: siticom and Currenta - a success story in the campus environment

Our network design for Currenta is an example of successful planning and orchestration in a complex campus environment. The focus is on the Currenta backbone project, in which an IP data network was implemented for the CHEMPARK operator across three locations. siticom acts as a system integrator and delivers a turnkey solution that provides Currenta with a high-performance ICT infrastructure for production facilities, logistics processes and offices. Since commissioning in October 2018, siticom has continuously optimized operations, expanded transmission capacity and successfully connected around 560 customer services. Operational challenges have also been overcome and the network is running smoothly with a high level of customer satisfaction. Further details on the Currenta backbone project can be found in our blog entry Campus network from A-Z at Currenta. As a long-standing partner, siticom will continue to support the operation and further development of the project in the future. In the following interview with two colleagues from our project team, Christoph Falkenstern and Robert Wehrheim, we find out more about the progress made in recent years and the latest developments that have driven the Currenta Backbone project forward. Hello Christoph, hello Robert could you briefly explain what role siticom has played in the last 6 years of partnership and what has changed since then? R. Wehrheim: For six years, siticom has played a decisive role in the operation and development of Currenta's IT network. We ensure smooth 24/7 operation and fulfill agreed service level agreements (SLAs). With our own service hotline, we offer quick solutions to problems. Since the beginning of our collaboration, Currenta has made significant progress in the area of IT network operations. Together we have developed further and established successful processes. We support the development of services and the design of new services, which has enabled the network to continue to evolve. C. Falkenstern: In addition to supplying hardware, we manage the movement of goods efficiently and offer warehousing outside the Chemparks for greater flexibility. We are also responsible for supplier handling for network infrastructure providers, software updates and quality management. Over the course of the partnership, we have developed into a competent partner for services and consulting. Today, we are a trusted advisor for Currenta and provide support not only in day-to-day operations, but also in strategic network planning and expansion. Our cooperation is based on trust, expertise and mutual success. What challenges did we overcome in the course of the project and how did we help to ensure that the network runs smoothly? C. Falkenstern: Over the course of the project, we overcame numerous challenges to ensure the smooth operation of the network. The Currenta network is monitored around the clock by siticom. In order to be able to react quickly in the event of a fault, we operate an on-call service staffed by technical specialists. This ensures that in the event of a fault, the network has been and can continue to be fault cleared immediately. In this way and through other accompanying measures, it was possible to correct problems with a specific router type without affecting Currenta services. The design of the Currenta network, which relies on redundancy wherever possible and sensible, is of course also a major advantage. R. Wehrheim: Regular software updates and monthly reports contribute to security and transparency. When expanding the network and introducing new services, the continuous availability of the network services is taken into account, just as security concerns are the focus of every measure. We react quickly and prudently to hardware problems from hardware manufacturers and are able to significantly expand network capacity and the number of usable customer ports. Overall, we have successfully doubled the available network capacity and increased the number of customer ports by a factor of around ten. The number of customer services was increased from around 50 in 2018 to currently around 1,250. C. Falkenstern: All of the measures listed make a significant contribution to ensuring that the network runs smoothly and meets customer needs. siticom acts as a competent contact for Currenta and customer requests are implemented effectively and quickly. Where appropriate and necessary, we supplement Currenta's service portfolio, for example by taking over a 24/7 fault hotline for Currenta's customer service. What new services or extensions have been added since the network went live and how does siticom plan to develop its ICT service portfolio in the future? C. Falkenstern / R. Wehrheim: Since our network went live, we have continuously expanded and improved our range of services: Together, we have greatly expanded the network, with a doubling of routers and an increased number of nodes. At the same time, we have significantly increased the transmission capacity by switching from one 100G and one 10G ring to two 100G rings. The available transport network capacity was also expanded. In addition, we are planning to upgrade DWDM routes to 400G capacity in the future. Due to our support, Currenta is now also active as an Internet service provider, which will enable us to configure Internet connections automatically in future, similar to other well-known network operators. In order to increase network stability, we are in the process of overcoming Currenta's dependence on a single network provider and will in future procure services from several providers. In addition, Currenta will in future offer leased lines or even capacity as a carrier to other service providers. We currently support around 1,250 customer services and are in the process of expanding the number of locations from 3 to 6. In addition to the existing locations in the Chemparks Leverkusen, Dormagen and Krefeld-Uerdingen, Monheim and PoP locations (Point of Presence) in Frankfurt and Düsseldorf have been added. Further PoP locations are planned for the future. The opening of PoP locations in Frankfurt and Düsseldorf marks an important step, as these are locations outside the Chemparks and thus strengthen our presence in important economic centers. With our support, Currenta has also expanded its performance and service portfolio in order to reduce future acquisitions. A new generation of service routers was introduced to further increase the scope of services in the network. This enables Currenta's customers to be offered a comprehensive range of services, including support in the planning, implementation and improvement of workflows and all kinds of processes. siticom thus plays a crucial role for our customer Currenta, as we provide them with important support that is essential for its appearance and future growth. • Redefining Wireless: The Dynamic Link Between 5G and eSIM.

An interview with Kathrin Asmuth (achelos) and Patrick Kleiner (siticom): eSIM technology, short for embedded Subscriber Identity Module, offers significant advantages over traditional physical SIM cards, making it a preferred choice for various customers, particularly in the context of 5G networks and IoT devices. Why eSIM and which customers does this concern? P. KLEINER: The primary reason for adopting eSIM is the elimination of the cumbersome process of physically changing SIM cards, which has been error-prone and inconvenient in the past. Instead, eSIMs can be provisioned and managed remotely through software and contactless services, simplifying the entire setup and activation process. The key benefits of enhanced roaming capabilities without physical SIM changes and the advanced data security are of particular interest for the logistics industry: it enables the seamless management of devices on a large scale, making it particularly advantageous for IoT devices with diverse applications or "lives." For instance, in a logistics scenario where IoT devices are employed across different facilities or geographic locations, each requiring specific security settings, eSIM technology allows for the remote provisioning and management of distinct profiles for these devices. This means that as devices move between different areas or security zones, their eSIM profiles can be automatically updated or switched, ensuring that they adhere to the appropriate security protocols for each specific location. This seamless and dynamic switching of security areas enhances operational efficiency, reduces the risk of security breaches, and enables logistics companies to maintain a high level of control and oversight over their IoT deployments, even on a global scale. K. ASMUTH: eSIM allows to seal the communication module, which significantly reduces the number of threats, from environmental or operational conditions as well as from malicious attack. This is especially true for connected industrial IoT devices that are increasingly deployed in dedicated, private 5G networks due to 5G’s advanced capabilities, particularly concerning reliability, throughput, latency and security. eSIM profiles, that contain the device identity and related network access credentials, allow the IoT device to benefit from the strong authentication mechanisms defined in the 5G standards, such as mutual authentication between the device and the network, ensuring that only authorized devices can connect to the network. A major benefit of eSIM technology is the capability for remote provisioning and management of the eSIM profiles, which makes it easier to activate, configure, and manage devices without physically accessing them. What are the challenges with eSIM & 5G and how do achelos and siticom address them? P. KLEINER: A significant challenge apart from industry standards and vendor dependency is, that implementing eSIM technology within the 5G ecosystem requires a comprehensive solution that goes beyond technical aspects. It also involves addressing potential security and resilience concerns. Creating a robust infrastructure that can handle eSIM provisioning, management, and security is essential to ensure uninterrupted connectivity and protect against cyber threats. Resilience is of utmost importance, especially as networks become increasingly critical to various sectors and industries. K. ASMUTH: This requires a Remote eSIM Provisioning (RSP) system, called SM-DP+ (Subscription Manager Data Preparation), complying with the technical and security requirements specified by the technology’s governing body, the GSM Association (GSMA). achelos is an innovative RSP technology enabler offering a complete suite of solutions covering all the components specified by the GSMA. The achelos software is cloud-native and enables any deployment scenario, no matter if public, private or hybrid cloud environment. In particular, the achelos’ SM-DP+ can be deployed, integrated, and operated as an integral part of the private 5G core network stack, either on-prem or in the cloud, offering RSP as a function of the private 5G network core. P. KLEINER: In addition to this, a crucial aspect lies in the knowledge and understanding of the various cores and radios involved in the technology. This knowledge is vital for optimizing the performance and compatibility of eSIM-enabled devices with 5G networks. One key contribution comes from our radio experts. Moreover, as system integrator we play a crucial role in addressing challenges related to use cases, customer requirements, and industry-specific knowledge. We can offer valuable insights into how eSIM and 5G can be effectively utilized across different sectors, providing customized solutions and consulting services to maximize the benefits for specific customer needs. Being early adopters of 5G we anticipate challenges, devise innovative solutions, and navigate potential pitfalls. How do siticom and achelos work together in this area and where should the journey go? P. KLEINER: To effectively collaborate on the integration of eSIM technology with 5G networks and chart a successful path forward, we need to focus on two critical aspects: leveraging the strong connection between 5G service architecture and the eSIM ecosystem and prioritizing security through service separation on devices. By pooling our resources, expertise, and customer insights, we can chart a successful journey forward, unlocking the full potential of eSIM and 5G technologies and delivering transformative experiences for businesses and consumers alike. Continuous research and exploration of innovative use cases will solidify our position as pioneers in this domain.
