We develop new solutions for our customers in our own 5G test lab in Weiterstadt. One of our focal points is the synergy of 5G campus networks and Industry 4.0.
One problem is the use of time synchronization IEEE 1588v2 in the Industry 4.0 environment. The IEEE 1588v2 standard is optimized for small networks with few subnetworks, low resource consumption and minimal administrative effort.
The PTP protocol IEEE 1588v2 is used in 5G OpenRan campus networks to synchronize the radio units.
It should be noted, however, that IEEE 1588 v1 and v2 clocks cannot be synchronized directly with one another, as they use different message formats. Solutions could be that islands with different IEEE 1588 variants work together using boundary clocks that provide different versions or different profiles via their ports.
We are looking for answers to the following questions:
